40 Under 40 & Comrades Ultra Marathon Update

After a relatively subdued start to March on the sales front, there is nothing like 7 sales in 5 days to let you know that the Perth property market is continuing to rise from its slumber.

In this month’s article I’m humbled to report that I was a successful recipient of a Business News 40 Under 40 award. I’d like to also give you an update on my Comrades Ultra Marathon training and the challenge of raising sufficient funds to cover 90 nights of emergency respite care at Vinnies Tom Fisher House.

40 Under 40

It took 3 years of nominations before I relented and got down to preparing my submission for the 40 Under 40 awards. I love to share and celebrate the successes of our company, staff and clients, but when asked to prepare a submission all about myself as an individual… it was not quite as easy! Going through the experience provided me with some great insights:

  • The success I have enjoyed is 100% attributable to the loyal, professional, hardworking team that sits alongside me and our amazing clients. Our business growth through a challenging market is testament to the great work being done across every division and as I say to all our staff, there can be no greater reward than receiving a great review, testimonial or referral.
  • Preparing the submission gave me time to reflect on where we have come since I first joined the company as a Junior Sales Agent in 1998. On reflection it is clear to me that we have laid solid foundations and now it is up to the entire team to decide how big a tower we build.
  • It was humbling to be recognised alongside amazing young(ish) Perth business people and hearing their stories. Despite the downturn there have been some amazing successes across a very diverse range of industries and I feel it is this diversification developing in Perth that will create a more vibrant, sustainable and buoyant economy and community.
  • Recognising the support of my family over the journey and appreciating the numerous personalised congratulations received from so many since the award night.

Comrades Marathon Training

Up until last weekend the training had been going really well, averaging about 60kms a week. Then last Monday I woke up sore! The past 10 days it has been hard to walk at times and when heading out for jogs to tick the body over, short runs of 5km – 10km feel rather long when every step hurts. Skipping a few massages and not doing enough stretching has caused a niggle in my right hip.

So now I have 10 days to get myself sorted before tackling the 3 Waters Marathon down in Bunbury as our Comrades qualifying event. Let me tell you that my commitment to Comrades means that even if every step along 42.2kms hurts, I WILL be qualifying next weekend. Then it’s just 9 weeks before we head to South Africa to tackle the 90kms run. If you are interested in following my training you can follow the runs / jogs here

Vinnies Tom Fisher House

As you may know I have committed to raising $22,500 to cover 90 nights of emergency respite accommodation for rough sleepers at Vinnies Tom Fisher House. I appreciate that there are many worthwhile causes to contribute to however if you are able to provide some support to this initiative and to assist keeping me motivated through every step of training as well as the 90kms on marathon day, it would be greatly appreciated.
